Recently, there was a discussion on the LinkedIn business platform. It was about the supposedly necessary separation between work and professional life, clear boundaries, overtime and after-work hours. The topic seems topical, but from a Buddhist point of view it is ancient and clear as day: there is only one life and we humans are extremely diverse (in Buddhist terms, we tend to be members of one of the five Buddha families plus karmic influences). Two topics are at the forefront of the LinkedIn question: personal life balance and clarity about one's own preferences, taking into account external conditions. It doesn't work. The result: even more effort, even more adaptation. What balance for life gives me and my environment well-being and success? Maybe I love opening emails on Sundays, maybe I check my emails on weekdays in a somewhat hectic, but for me still just pleasantly early morning and thus effectively fulfill any external time constraints of availability. Or I relax and surf late in the evening and feel good about it, and overtime is welcome quality time for me. My Buddhist-influenced, personal formula is a different one. Trying to live and experience everything in a permeable way, because setting boundaries hardens me. Then don't react with activism. Give time. Listen in, even if this introspection only lasts 1 minute. Recognize my reaction patterns, realize the attachments. Then react appropriately if necessary. Shape this reaction for the benefit of sentient beings. And smile.
